Computer programming is a broad-spectrum course that prepares students for a number of opportunities in the field of computer science and technology. The intensive computer programmer and computer analyst programs at Ontario colleges often involve completing work on personal time, but the skills and training students come away with will be in high demand.

Computer Programmer and Computer Analyst Courses

Computer programmer and analyst courses are intended to prepare students with knowledge of business systems, database development, data communications and object-oriented programming, which can be applied to a number of real-world careers.

Along with technical courses like web technologies, systems analysis and database design, students will also be trained in problem solving and technical reporting, which prepares them to handle complex situations they may encounter on the job. Many colleges offer an optional work placement, allowing students to apply their skills in the real world.

General Computer Programmer and Computer Analyst Program Requirements

An Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, which includes a grade 12 English and grade 12 mathematics credit, is required for computer analyst and programmer programs at Ontario colleges. Additional math courses may also be required and are often encouraged.

You’ll find average starting salaries in these fields to be around $40,000 per year, but as your expertise grows and your career path develops, you could see salaries as high as $60,000 to $90,000 per year.
