What to expect from a career as a Computer or Video Game Designer
A career designing computer and video games may seem too good to be true, but computer gaming programs at Ontario colleges can help make it happen. Computer game design and development won’t be all fun and games, however – although you’ll get plenty of hands-on testing time, the programs still require hard work, attention to detail and the ability to think ahead.
If you have digital design skills and a passion for computer games, and you want to become a video or computer game designer, here’s what you need to know.
Computer Gaming Courses
Computer gaming programs provide multimedia training and cover all aspects of game creation, including storytelling, design, motion capture and 3D animation. Classes in drawing and modeling teach students the core methods used to design games, which they can build on using the latest computer game design software.
Study areas include environment, game levels, texture, character and animation, as well as the influence of game culture on design and development.
Hands-on training and opportunities to meet with industry professionals help students prepare for work in the computer gaming industry. Some programs may also include a field placement.
General Computer Gaming Program Requirements
Computer gaming programs are offered as entry-level diploma programs and graduate studies certificate programs for those with training in the design field.
Entry-level programs require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, including a grade 12 English credit. Graduate studies programs require proof of formal education in the field (post-secondary degree or diploma), or a combination of education and work experience.
Students in both types of programs may be asked to submit a portfolio of their work in the visual arts or design field.
