What to expect from a career working with Gas and Oil Burners
Along with other skilled trades, there is a shortage of gas technicians and apprentices in the work force. These technicians work on gas and oil lines and equipment on residential, industrial and commercial buildings. Gas and oil burner programs at Ontario colleges shape students into highly skilled technicians with the knowledge and hands-on experience to find employment in this in-demand field.

Gas and Oil Burner Courses
Ontario college gas and oil burner programs consist of lecture and workshop courses to provide students with both the theoretical knowledge and practical experience necessary for Technical Standards and Safety Act (TSSA) gas technician 2 or 3 certifications.
Some of the subjects courses will cover include (but aren’t limited to):
- Equipment and pipe installation practices
- Electrical circuits
- Troubleshooting gas appliances
- Heating appliances installation and servicing
Courses also cover applicable codes, acts and regulations to ensure the highest health and safety standards.
General Gas and Oil Burner Program Requirements
Ontario college gas and oil burner programs preparing students for Gas Technician 3 (G3) certification require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, including grade 12 English. Some programs require a grade 12 math course, as well.
For students to be eligible for Gas Technician 2 programs, they must have their G3 gas and oil burner certifications. Other program requirements can vary, so be sure to check them carefully.
Gas and Oil Burner Jobs
Graduates of gas and oil burner programs are qualified to work in a variety of technician roles in the fuel and trades sectors, including (but not limited to):
- Steamfitting
- Fire protection
- Combustion operation
- HVAC installation
There are also opportunities for graduates to work in gas sales, marketing and technical support, or to pursue apprenticeships in sheet metal, plumbing and refrigeration.
