What to expect from a career as an Elevating Devices Mechanic
Elevating device mechanics are critical in our society – whether it’s an elevator that stops working in a high-rise office building or a chair lift that fails in a hospital, it’s critical that repairs take place quickly and efficiently. Elevating devices programs at Ontario colleges train students to be in demand in their industry, and to have successful and safe careers servicing elevating equipment.

Elevating Devices Courses
Elevating devices programs are offered as apprenticeships, which means much of the learning will take place on the job. In class course material covered will include:
- Equipment Servicing Theory and Practice. Students will learn to service a variety of elevating devices, including elevators, escalators and more. Due to the age of much of the equipment, emphasis will be placed on teaching servicing, modernizing and altering older devices.
- Power Sources. Students will gain knowledge on the various power sources used to operate devices, including electricity and hydraulics, and how they impact servicing techniques.
- Safety and Regulation Standards. Students will learn safety practices for rigging, scaffolding and preventing injury, and will also learn the regulatory standards of elevating devices to ensure they are up to code.
General Elevating Devices Program Requirements
In order to register for Ontario college elevating devices programs, students must have received their Offer of Training letter from the Ministry of Colleges and Universities.
Elevating Devices Jobs
Elevating devices mechanics are responsible for servicing elevators, escalators, moving walks, chair lifts and more. Jobs exist in both residential and commercial sectors.
