What to expect from a career as a Hotel or Restaurant Manager
Hospitality management is one of Canada’s fastest growing industries. Hotel & restaurant management programs at Ontario colleges are a great choice for those with a flair for impressions and the professional drive necessary to keep an establishment at the top of the industry.
If you’re interested in hospitality management and can see yourself on the front lines of a hotel, restaurant or resort, here’s what you need to know.
Hospitality Courses
Hospitality programs at Ontario colleges will give you a full overview of the hotel, restuarant and resort industry, from dining room service and housekeeping to sanitation and kitchen production techniques, so you’ll have a firm grasp of day-to-day operations in a hotel or restaurant.
You’ll also receive extensive business training with courses like statistics, communications and cost control. These courses, along with the latest in restaurant and hotel management software, will equip you with targeted skills to stay on top of financial and business practices and oversee an establishment.
Most hospitality programs will offer in-house training and work placements in the field to give students hands-on experience in their area of choice.
General Hospitality Program Requirements
Hospitality management program admissions require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, with a grade 12 English credit. A grade 12 mathematics course may also be required. Students may also be asked to purchase a school-sanctioned uniform.
Additional courses such as accounting, information technology and tourism will be seen as assets.
