What to expect from a career as a Small Business Owner or Entrepreneur
Starting a small business is a dream for many people – but it takes a lot of planning and hard work to make it a reality. Entrepreneurship and small business programs at Ontario colleges can help you live your dream by giving you the skills and knowledge you need to get your small business ideas off the ground.
If you’re interested in the freedom and excitement of becoming an entrepreneur, and are willing to put in the effort it takes to make it happen, here’s what you need to know.
Small Business Courses
Many small business programs start off with the same core courses as any business program – marketing, accounting, economics and much more. However, once the foundations are learned, these same areas will be covered from the unique perspective of starting a small business. Students will learn how to plan business ventures, obtain small business loans and financing, and learn about all the small business insurance requirements and taxes that apply when you become an entrepreneur. They will also learn how to effectively pitch their ideas and how to market a small business.
Case studies and business analysis are also part of the curriculum in small business programs. Students may also be asked to take a small business opportunity and develop it from idea to implementation, in simulated small business venture experiments.
General Small Business Program Requirements
Ontario college small business and entrepreneurship programs require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent. Grade 12 English and mathematics credits may also be required. Credits in communications, business and accounting are seen as assets.
Small Business Jobs and Salaries
It is difficult to predict the salary of a small business owner, as it depends entirely on the success of the business and the overhead for operation. However, on average, program graduates have a starting salary of $30,000 per year, with the potential to earn much more. Many successful small business owners see salaries in the $100,000 range or higher, but it can take years of hard work and much lower salaries before reaching that point.
