What to expect from a career in Fine Arts
Fine arts programs at Ontario colleges are designed to provide students with a well-rounded arts education that covers a number of disciplines. From drawing and painting to sculpting and printmaking, and so much more, students will have the opportunity to experiment with the different disciplines while developing their own unique artistic style.
If you have a passion for the creative that you want to develop in a fine arts program, here’s what you need to know.
Fine Arts Courses
Studio work is a huge component of most fine arts programs. It involves a combination of both independent work and assignments from instructors, with plenty of room for self-expression and discovery while practicing skills and techniques.
Aside from drawing, sculpting and painting, many Ontario college fine arts programs incorporate digital technology into their programs with courses on computer design. Theory classes may also be included, such as art history and art appreciation, and business courses that can help students prepare for careers in the fine arts field.
General Fine Arts Program Requirements
For Ontario college fine arts programs offered at the diploma and certificate level, requirements typically include an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (or equivalent). Visual arts course credits are recommended and students may also be asked to produce a portfolio.
Many fine arts programs offer the option to continue in an advanced diploma or degree program, which may offer more specialized skills in one particular fine arts discipline.
Fine Arts Jobs and Salaries
Fine arts programs open up a number of career opportunities, from animation and illustration to sculpting and painting. Other career choices include teaching, sales and advertising, commercial design, gallery curators and much more.
Because the career opportunities are so diverse, it is difficult to predict a salary range. Graduates of fine arts programs have an average starting salary of roughly $30,000 per year, but have the potential to make much more. For client-based work, such as graphic design or animation, hourly wages could run as high as $50 an hour or more.
