What to expect from a Performing or Acting Career
For some, the spotlight is the only place to be. Acting programs at Ontario colleges help students find their way to centre stage and develop the skills they need to have a successful career in the acting industry. Whether it’s for film, radio, television or stage, an acting program can help students find and hone their unique performing style and learn to market themselves as professionals of their craft.
If you’re ready to live your dream of becoming an actor or performer, here’s what you need to know.
Acting Courses
Ontario college acting programs may be offered with different specialties, such as film and television acting, stage acting, voice acting and more, but they do share a few common curriculum points:
- Studio / Conservatory Experience. Time spent on the stage or in the studio gives students the opportunity to practice their movements, stage techniques, timing and projection in a real-world environment.
- Theory Classes. Students will learn to research roles and characters, and will also study examples of their craft in classroom sessions.
- Business Skills. In many acting programs, students will learn about the industry and how to market themselves within it.
General Acting Program Requirements
Acting programs typically require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (or equivalent), which may include a grade 12 English credit. Credits in senior performing arts classes are also considered desirable.
Acting Jobs and Salaries
Salaries for actors are difficult to predict, as they will vary by the type of acting and the individual contract. Acting work can often be sporadic, and it may be necessary to take on other work in between jobs, until a regular acting job is secured.
Possible job opportunities include stage, film or television acting, voice-over narration, radio and television commercials and voice work in animation and video games.
